2008年10月にパラグライダープレワールドカップが行われた。

雄大な北アルプスをバックに最高のロケーションの白馬八方尾根。その秘めているポテンシャルは高く、日本でも有数のパラグライダーエリア。
八方では毎年大会が行われていて、１００名を越える選手が参加し白馬の空を賑わせている。
将来的に八方でワールドカップを開催するために今回はプレワールドカップとして海外からの選手も参加。

パラグライダーの大会では「パイロンレース」と呼ばれるものが主流です。
GPSデータで設定されたいろいろなポイントを、決められた順番通りにどれだけ速くまわれるかを競います。オリエンテーリングの空中版みたいなもの。
パラグライダーは上昇気流をうまく利用して飛び、数時間もの飛行が可能なのです。

This Paraglider competition was held in the Northern Japanese alps here in Hakuba because of the mountain range`s large scale. The highest mountain is Mount Shirouma (White Horse Mountain) which measures 2932metres. This location was chosen because of the potential for the pilots to fly to higher elevations, over a wider course, and for long periods of time.
This competition is held every year in Hakuba and over 100 pilots take part. In the future Hakuba wishes to host the World Cup.

The competition type is a "Pilon Race", there are various types of competition but a "Pilon Race" is the main one in use. GPS data is used in a grid sytem (UTM) to guide the Pilot`s to the various points (pilon`s). The quickest Pilot to reach all points and the goal is the winner, it is similar to orienteering.
Due to thermals Pilots are able to fly for longer and higher allowing this kind of competition to be held.
